Two Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine awarded in 2025 trace their groundbreaking immunology research back to the Seattle-area biotech startup Darwin Molecular, founded in 1992 and backed by Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Researchers including Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell, who joined Darwin Molecular later, identified the FOXP3 gene linked to autoimmune disease during a pioneering era preceding the completion of the Human Genome Project.
